• Assistant Controller

  • Overview

    The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing and overseeing SelectQuote’s payroll and accounts payable teams and supporting general accounting functions as needed. This role will be required to train, manage, motivate, and establish developmental goals and provide ongoing coaching and direction to their teams.


    Payroll Management

    • Manages and oversees the payroll team of two employees, ensuring payroll is properly computed, prepared, recorded, and distributed to the Company’s employees
    • Instrumental in designing and developing processes and controls integrating HR operations and accounting to ensure payroll is processed accurately, timely and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
    • Manages biweekly multistate payroll processing, ensuring payroll is properly prepared. This includes, but is not limited to, the processing of all payroll reports, all employee changes, required deductions, special payroll runs and payments (including withholding, unemployment, and tax) with accuracy and by required deadlines
    • Responsible for compiling data to fulfill audit requirements, legal reporting and compliance requirements
    • Keeps apprised of federal, state and local payroll laws and regulations to ensure company compliance


    Accounts Payable Management


    • Manages and oversees the accounts payable team of two employees, ensuring bills and payments are accurately recorded, entered, and paid
    • Reviews the weekly ACH payment reports prepared by the Accounts Payable team for approval to pay
    • Provides oversight and support of the employee expense reporting process through Concur


    Accounting Support

    • Supports the Director of Financial Reporting on various projects as needed (GAAP research, implementing new ASC standards, process improvements)
    • Develops, documents and implements policies and procedures in coordination with the Controller and Director of Financial Reporting
    • Reviews monthly balance sheet reconciliations prepared by the senior accountants as part of the monthly close process
    • Organizes and leads property tax filings in multiple states
    • Assists with fulfilling annual financial statement audit requirement



    • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, growing environment that necessitates continuous process developments and improvements
    • Detail oriented, accurate, organized and capable of prioritizing workload of multiple tasks and deadlines
    • Excellent conceptual, analytical, and project management skills, with the ability to present ideas at both the “big picture” and detail level
    • Ability to work independently, and as a team member, while using discretion in decision making and sound judgment in problem solving
    • Ability to communicate directly and diplomatically with all levels of employees and outside vendors
    • Abides by all regulations, policies, and payroll and HR laws and practices
    • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain confidential information

    Training and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting
    • Experience leading multiple direct reports
    • Experience in leading full cycle payroll in a multiple-state environment
    • Public Accounting experience and CPA strongly preferred
    • Familiarity with UltiPro, NetSuite and Concur a plus or ability and aptitude to learn new systems quickly
